Ratchet Cutters for Aluminium and Copper Power Cables

KNIPEX ratchet cutters, for large cross-section cables

Ratchet cutters cut aluminium and copper power cables through a series of successive strokes, rather than a single squeeze. The ratchet mechanism multiplies the force, so a thick cable can be cut one-handed and with little effort. They are part of the hand tools section at Sanco Grup.
The models are KNIPEX, made in Germany from forged, oil-hardened special steel, with 3-stage cutting.

Models available

KNIPEX 95 31 250, up to Ø 32 mm

3-stage ratchet cutter, 250 mm, for aluminium and copper cables up to 32 mm in diameter. Compact design and low weight, which also allows work in tight spaces.

KNIPEX 95 36 320, up to Ø 60 mm

3-stage ratchet cutter, for aluminium and copper cables up to 60 mm in diameter, intended for large cross-section power cables in panels, transformer stations and distribution networks.

Professional Rennsteig tools (listed in the category)

The category also lists Rennsteig tools of German quality: the 430230 automatic center punch, the 4321200 and 4301200 center punches, the 1400100 hollow punch and the 2714002 and ULTIMAX 2756002 demolition bars. See also the screw extractors and accessories.

Main features

Ratchet mechanism

Cutting is done through repeated strokes, each advancing the blade one step, which allows one-handed operation.

High force transmission ratio

Reduced physical effort even on large cross-section cables, compared with conventional cutting pliers.

3-stage cutting

The stage setting adapts the blade advance to the cable thickness.

Forged special steel

Forged, oil-hardened tool steel, for blades that keep their edge under repeated use.

Compact construction

Low weight and small footprint, useful when working in panels and tight spaces.

Protection against pinching

A protective lug that prevents fingers being pinched during operation.

Use with care

Not for steel wire and wire ropes

These cutters are intended solely for aluminium and copper cables. They must not be used on steel wire, wire ropes or very fine, highly flexible stranded conductors, as the blades will be damaged. For steel, see the steel cable cutters.

Confirm the cable is de-energised

These models are not VDE insulated. Cutting must be done only on a de-energised cable. Live work requires insulated, tested tools. See the VDE insulated tools.

Recommended applications

Electrical networks and transformer stations

Cutting large cross-section power cables, during installation and interventions.

Electrical panels and automation

Shortening supply cables, in spaces where large pliers do not fit.

Industrial installations

Installation and maintenance work on power cable routes.

Service and field interventions

Fast, one-handed cutting, without a powered tool. See also the electricians hand tools.

The ratchet cutters for aluminium and copper power cables category from Sanco Grup includes KNIPEX models made in Germany, with 3-stage cutting: the 250 mm 95 31 250 cutter, for cables up to Ø 32 mm, and the 95 36 320 cutter, for cables up to Ø 60 mm. The ratchet mechanism multiplies the force and allows one-handed cutting with reduced physical effort, while the compact build makes work in tight spaces possible. The blades are forged, oil-hardened tool steel, and a protective lug prevents pinching. They are not intended for steel wire, wire ropes or very fine stranded conductors. They suit electrical networks, transformer stations, panels, automation, industrial installations and field interventions.

Frequently asked questions

How does a ratchet cutter work?

Cutting is done through repeated strokes of the handle, each advancing the blade one step, instead of a single strong squeeze.

What is the maximum diameter?

Up to Ø 32 mm on the 95 31 250 model and up to Ø 60 mm on the 95 36 320 model.

What materials can they cut?

Aluminium and copper cables.

Can they cut steel wire or wire rope?

No. They are not suitable for steel wire, wire ropes or very fine, highly flexible stranded conductors.

Are they insulated for live work?

These models are not VDE insulated, so they are used only on de-energised cable.

Can they be used one-handed?

Yes, the ratchet mechanism allows one-handed operation.

Where are they made?

In Germany, by KNIPEX.
