The KNIPEX Cobra XL 87 01 400 adjustable pliers for installers is the large, 400 mm version of the high-tech water pump (tongue-and-groove) plier range, with a self-locking device. The XL size offers considerably greater capacity and force, for large pipes and fittings. Adjustment is made directly on the workpiece, at the touch of a button: you position the upper jaw, press the button and close the lower jaw. Ingeniously simple! It is made in Germany.

The self-locking on pipes and nuts prevents it from slipping off the workpiece and requires less hand force, even on large parts. The teeth set against the direction of rotation, with specially hardened gripping surfaces (hardness approx. 61 HRC), provide a firm, stable grip with high wear resistance. Fine adjustment, in 27 positions, allows optimal adaptation to different sizes.

The box-joint design ensures high stability thanks to the double guide, and the secure holding of the hinge bolt prevents unintentional change of the setting. A special guard prevents the operator's fingers from being pinched during work.

The body is made of chrome-vanadium alloy steel, forged and multi-stage oil-hardened, with a polished head, to DIN ISO 8976. It grips pipes up to 3½ inch (90 mm) and nuts up to 95 mm. The handles have red non-slip plastic grips. Length 400 mm, weight 1190 g. Ideal for thermal and industrial installations, large fittings and heavy work. Also available in other lengths (87 01 250, 87 01 300) and in the XXL 560 mm version (87 01 560).

How it works

Position the upper jaw on the pipe or nut, press the adjustment button and push the lower jaw until it closes on the piece. The teeth set against the direction of rotation self-lock and prevent slipping, so you tighten and loosen with minimal effort, even on large parts. The pliers stay set at the chosen size, with no unintentional changes.

How is it different from 300 mm and XXL?

The 87 01 400 (XL, 400 mm) grips 90 mm pipes and 95 mm nuts, for heavy work. The 87 01 300 (300 mm) is for general use (70 mm pipe), and the 87 01 560 (XXL, 560 mm) offers even greater capacity.

Can it be used for live working?

No. The 87 01 400 model has no VDE insulation. For live working up to 1000 V, choose a Cobra VDE model.
